Martinsburg powers past Jefferson

By Staff | Oct 26, 2012

It took Martinsburg approximately four offensive plays to score their first touchdown of the night. It was surely not there last as Martinsburg ended up defeating the Jefferson Cougars 60-3 to improve to 8-1 on the season. Martinsburg’s first score came on a Justin Clinton pass to receiver Malique Watkins. Clinton also hit receiver Cedric Brown for another touchdown pass in the first half. The rest of Martinsburg’s scoring came from their ground game. Martinsburg ran on Jefferson from of a number of formations including the spread and Wing T formation. Martinsburg’s offensive line contributed in large part to their success on the ground, leading a combination of running backs to six rushing touchdowns.

Jefferson’s best offense came on their kickoff returns by Rynal Newman. Three times Rynal Newman returned kickoffs beyond the 50 yard line giving Jefferson’s offense great field position. Jefferson was unable to capitalize on the field position each time mainly because of untimely penalties. Jefferson’s offense did show signs of life in the second quarter as quarterback Andrew King connected on a pair of passes one to Geoffrey Walker and the other to Darrod Doleman. The drive ended with a Jefferson 17 yard field goal, which turned out to be their only points for the night. Jefferson’s offense was held to 133 yards of total offense for the night. Martinsburg’s continued attack on the ground and a punt return touchdown by Malique Watkins lead to Martinsburg leading at halftime 46-3.

Martinsburg’s speed and power proved to be too much Friday night for the Cougars. Bulldog quarterback Justin Clinton finished off an efficient night with 2 touchdown passes, for 83 yards, connecting on 4 of 8 passes. Martinsburg’s offense had well over 400 yards of total offense for the night. Jefferson high coach Richard Mills took note of Martinsburg’s talent saying, “we probably face the best team in the state in my opinion, and I don’t see why they can’t win their third title this year. They have all the talent there, the speed, and the coaching.”

Coach Mills also mentioned how he felt about his team’s performance saying, “Our kids never let down, they never quit, they were just a little over matched, but they never hung their heads and I’m real proud of them.” Jefferson’s record drops to 1-7 on the year and they will travel to Hedgesville High School next Friday to face the Eagles at 7 p.m.
