By Staff | Jan 11, 2013

The Jefferson County Commission and the Departments of Planning and Zoning have recently initiatedinitiating a 24 month planning process for the development of the 2014 Comprehensive Plan, “Envision Jefferson 2035”. In October 2012, the County Commission appointed 13 members to serve on the Envision Jefferson 2035 Steering Committee which is working in conjunction with the Jefferson County Department of Planning Staff to provide leadership e in this planning process, the County Commission has determined that a Steering Committee would be an asset in the development of the 2014 Comprehensive Plan. The Committee will be comprised of members appointed by the County Commission who will provide input, policy feedback and recommendations to staffSteering Committee Members are assisting staff in assessing the publics’ input into local planning issues and policies, being mindful of current political issues, being educated on best management practices of Planning and Comprehensive Plan concepts, and providing input, policy feedback and recommendations to staff for possible inclusion into the 2014 Comprehensive Plan.

In October, the County Commission formed the existing Steering Committee by allowing each of the five Commissioners to appoint 2 citizens to serve on the Steering Committee from their geographic area of the County and by jointly appointing 3 members at large. In light of the fact that Jane Tabb has subsequently been elected to the County Commission, the County Commission has determined to re-open the Steering Committee to two additional members. In addition to considering those citizens that previously expressed interest in being on the Steering Committee, the County Commission is recruiting members from all racial and ethnic groups as well as local residents who own large tracts of land in Jefferson County to serve on the Steering Committee.

The Commissioners are requesting that interested citizens apply to be considered utilizing the application form below and returning it to the Department of Planning by the close of business (COB) Wednesday January 16, 2013.

Interested citizens should be aware that participation in the Steering Committee requires a commitment to attend meetings once or twice a month for the planning period extending from the date of appointment through December 2014. A kick-off meeting has already been held and staff will bring new members up to date on all handouts and discussions to date. There will also be expected participation in public input meetings which will be held at four different phases throughout the two-year process. The interested individual will be required to be involved in at least one additional sub-committee that will require additional meetings. Most meetings will be held at 7 p.m. or on Saturday..

This is an exciting time for the county and interested citizens are being invited to have the opportunity to be instrumental in creating a plan that will benefit our county’s future.
