Riser's baseball team not included in Division III playoffs

May 15, 2015

Wayne Riser's Mary Washington Eagles, a non-scholarship, NCAA Division III team, were not included in the national baseball tournament which starts this week at eight different locales.

Despite a 27-7 overall record the Eagles were not extended a bid to any of the eight regionals, some of which have eight teams and some have only six teams.

Riser's team finished third in the Capital Athletic Conference's regular season behind Frostburg and Salisbury. Frostburg lost only three games all year and was placed in the Mideast Region that is being hosted by sixth-seeded Washington & Jefferson (Pa.). Salisbury lost only four games and has been placed in the eight-team Mid-Atlantic Region to be played in York.

Several schools were moved away from their natural geographical location just to get them into the 56-team tournament. Millsaps (Tennessee) was placed in the West Region. A California-based team was brought to an Eastern Daylight Time Zone.

At York, the eight teams entered are Keen (New Hampshire), Mitchell (Connecticut), Johns Hopkins (Baltimore), Alvernia (Pa.), Catholic (Washington, D.C.), Penn State-Berks, Salisbury (Maryland) and Misericordia (Pa.).

At Washington & Jefferson, the six teams are Shenandoah (Virginia), Heidelberg (Ohio), La Roche (Ohio), Adrian, Washington & Jefferson and top-seeded Frostburg.

Riser's team moved its record to 25-5 at the close of the regular season and then won its first two games in the conference tournament to give the Eagles 14 straight wins. Losses to Frostburg and Salisbury ended Mary Washington's run in the tournament.

Mary Washington last played on April 18, but had to wait until Sunday, May 10, to find out if it would be selected to play in the national tournament.

After coaching 22 seasons at Shepherd, Riser just completed his third year at Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia
