Cannons' rough patch finds them losing too many games

June 26, 2015
Bob Madison - Chronicle Sports , Shepherdstown Chronicle

The Charles Town Cannons of the Valley Baseball League had only played 13 games through this past Sunday, but they were already 5.5 games behind front-running Strasburg in the circuit's Northern Division.

A five-game losing streak befell the Cannons and their overall record was just 4-9.

In their last 10 games, the Cannons were only 2-8.

Scoring runs had become a problem for the team of college-age players.

Only Christian Khawam was having much success against the league's pitchers among the Charles Town players listed in the 12-team circuit's hitters who qualified with enough at-bats.

Khawam was 16-for-48 for a .333 batting average.

Bryson Bowman was batting .234 (11-for-47), Andrew Bream was at .219 (7-for-32), Sam Fragale at .211 (8-for-38), Carlos Matamoros at .209 (9-for-43) and Jacob Jaye was batting .182 (6-for-33) in games through Sunday, June 21.

Charles Town pitchers qualifying for the league's official statistics were Stephen Solomon (0-1 record, 0.00 ERA and 13 innings pitched, Brandon Caples (0-2 record, 1.88 ERA and 14.1 innings pitched, Steven Ridings (2-0 record, 2.25 ERA and 20 innings pitched) and Tyler Dearden (1-1 record, 6.17 ERA and 11.2 innings pitched).

Eight of the league's 12 teams qualify for the championship playoffs. Charles Town was in fifth place in the Northern Division and must finish the 44-game season in at least fourth place to qualify for the playoffs.
