Celebrating National Newspaper Week

October 2, 2015
Shepherdstown Chronicle

The upcoming week is dedicated to newspapers as the industry and the country celebrate National Newspaper Week. The designation was first given by the Newspaper Association Managers in 1940 as a time to celebrate the newspaper industry. Continuing to celebrate 75 years later, all who write and read the printed word are honored.

The theme of the celebration this year is "The Power of the Press." In day-to-day reporting one can see that power as reporters provide up to the minute coverage on everything from foreign policy, the President, upcoming elections all the way to local river spills, parades and winning football games.

Each of you reading this understand the importance of newspapers in our world, especially in the realm of local small-town news.

While the television computerized news provides up to the minute coverage on everything around the world, the hometown newspaper is still the best place to find the local write ups about the local people. Parents continue to cut clippings of their children's athletic endeavors; local businesses advertise and events are announced and followed up within the newspaper's pages.

National Newspaper Week runs from Oct. 4-10. Celebrate with us as we continue to provide the needed local coverage of Shepherdstown-specific events as well as things around the area. During the week and beyond, we take pride in bringing you the printed word and look forward to your continued support of the Chronicle (and other printed newspapers) in the year ahead.
