Pitching keeps Jefferson moving forward

April 8, 2016
Bob Madison - Chronicle Sports , Shepherdstown Chronicle

Jefferson traveled to Myrtle Beach with a 5-0 record and was scheduled to play at least four games in South Carolina.

The Cougars opened there with a 3-0 win over Spanish Fort, Alabama as left-hander Bradley Davis pitched them to a tournament-opening win.

Austin Cross didn't fare as well in the second game when he received no run support in a 3-0 loss to St. James (South Carolina).

Against Brockport (New York), the Cougars showed much more offense in winning 12-6 to improved their record to 7-1 overall. Dylan Carroll was the winning pitcher.

Friday's scheduled game was rained out and so was Saturday's, so the Cougars actually played only three games on the week-long road trip.

Back at home on Monday, April 4, the Cougars defeated visiting Berkeley Springs, 8-1.

In a Sectional game at home on Tuesday, Jefferson rallied for three runs in the sixth inning to trim Musselman, 4-1, and shove the overall record to 9-1 with a 2-0 record in Sectional games.

Davis went 5.2 innings against the Applemen, yielding six hits and one walk while fanning five. Cross got the pitching win with his 1.1 innings of work. Cross struggled with his control, throwing just 12 strikes in the 30 pitches he needed. He walked two and allowed a hit, but kept Musselman off the scoreboard.

Paul Witt had two hits, Austin Bulman scored two runs and Cross drove in a run.

Washington High also went to Myrtle Beach for the same tournament, taking a 2-1 overall record with it.

The Patriots lost all three games they played in South Carolina, falling to Charles Flowers (Maryland), High Point Christian (North Carolina) and St. Vincent-St. Mary (Ohio) and returning from the beach area with a 2-4 overall record.

In its first game back at home, Washington lost a one-run verdict at Spring Mills High to move their losing streak to five games.
