Garden Club to hold plant sale

By Staff | Apr 15, 2016

Members of the Potomac-Mecklenburg Garden Club are celebrating the arrival of spring by preparing for their annual plant sale to be held on Saturday, May 7, from 9 a.m. to noon, rain or shine. The sale will be held at its traditional location, on the grounds of Trinity Episcopal Church on German Street.

For this annual sale, club members supply a large selection plants from their own gardens and those of friends. Shoppers can expect to find popular natives, such as cone flowers, twin leaf and bee balm, a wide variety of spring and summer blooming perennials, flowering shrubs, and more, all at modest prices. Again this year, club member donations will be supplemented by unusual annuals, herbs and hanging baskets from a local nursery.

In addition, the club will support efforts to stem the loss of Monarch butterflies by selling native milkweed plants, which are essential to the Monarch’s survival.

Members will staff a table to answer general gardening questions and provide growing tips for customer’s purchases. Customers also will have an opportunity to purchase locally produced Duchess Apiary honey and chat with the beekeeper.

Proceeds from this annual sale fund a $1,000 scholarship for a local high school senior, book donations to local school libraries, a camp scholarship and efforts to promote conservation and to beautify the community.

The club meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month at St. Agnes Parish Center, Shepherdstown and welcomes new members. Contact Kathy Gilbert at katebg52@wave2net.com.
