Shepherdstown Chronicle

Points in all the relays at the Friends of Coal Relays held at Charleston's Laidley Field lifted Jefferson to the team victory at the state's most prestigious track and field event other than the annual state meet.

The Cougars won the 4x100 relay with Nick Mazaleski, Christian Johnson, Quenton Parker and Trevon Smith en route to scoring 87 points . . . outdistancing Hurricane (72), Cabell Midland (71) and University (64) in the crowded team field.

Jefferey Gaskins, Mazaleski, Porter and Smith teamed to finish second in the 4x200 relay, and Mazaleski, Gaskins, Asher Personett and Johnson were together in a third-place finish in the 4x400 relay.

Another third place was gained by Mason Young, Colin Hayes, Delmar Hagedorn and Personett in the 4x800 relay.

And the shuttle hurdles relay unit came in sixth.

Mazaleski got the Cougars eight points with a second-place showing in the 400 dash, and Phillip Keller also brought in eight points with his second-place finish in the shot put. Keller also placed fifth in the discus.

Giving the team six points with third-place showings were Personett in the 800 distance run, Smith in the 100 meters and Cortez Jenkins in the 110 high hurdles. Jenkins also placed fourth in the 300 low hurdles, an event where Zach LaRue was fifth. LaRue was also sixth in the 110 hurdles.

Darnell Gardener was fourth in the long jump and sixth in the high jump.

Hayes was a fifth-place finisher in the 1600 distance run, and Kaleeb Jones gave the Cougars two points with his fifth place in the shot put.

The end-of-season Class AAA state meet is also held at Laidley Field in Charleston.
