Back Alley Garden Tour and Tea coming

May 6, 2016
Shepherdstown Chronicle

The Shepherdstown Community Club will sponsor its 19th Back Alley Garden Tour & Tea on Saturday and Sunday, May 21 and 22, (rain or shine) featuring a self-guided walking tour of some 20 private gardens that are rarely open to the public and an elegant afternoon tea. Incorporated in 1762, Shepherdstown has many fine 18th- and early 19th-century homes. Some of the Garden Tour gardens will be located on the grounds of these homes.

Tickets can be purchased in advance or in person during the event. When a visitor exchanges the paid ticket for a tour map on May 21 or 22, one will be allowed unlimited entry into all gardens during both days. Each visitor will be treated to one tea sitting during the weekend which will include unlimited tea (hot and cold) as well as a plate of sweet and savory delicacies.

Tea is served in fine china cups and saucers from the Shelley A. Marshall Foundation.

The second floor War Memorial Building ballroom (handicap accessible on German & King streets) is transformed with abundant fresh flowers and elegantly prepared tea tables.

Ticket prices are $20 for the Garden Tour and Tea ordered before midnight May 18; $25 after that including the days of the event.

Tickets are available at the Shepherdstown Sweet Shop and Four Seasons Books both located on German Street, and Yarnability on South Duke Street (cash, check or credit card). Advance Sale Tickets on line by PayPal: www.paypal.com click on Acceptance Mark to order tickets online.

Tour maps plus a Tea Ticket will be distributed to ticket holders at the War Memorial Building (German & King streets) beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 21 and at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 22. The gardens open at 10 a.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday.
