Class AAA sees changed alignment

August 12, 2016
Bob Madison - Chronicle Sports , Shepherdstown Chronicle

With Lewis County, Elkins, Point Pleasant, Nitro, Oak Hill, Lincoln County, Shady Spring and Logan all moving from the Class AAA ranks back to Class AA there will be changes in this area for the Sectional and Regional alignments used for postseason play.

Lewis County and Elkins were previously aligned with Buckhannon and Hampshire in a Sectional, but that grouping has to be changed.

Hampshire will be placed in a Sectional with Jefferson and Washington for all boys and girls sports that have Sectionals.

Another Sectional in the Eastern Panhandle will have Martinsburg, Spring Mills, Musselman and Hedgesville.

The six schools in Jefferson and Berkeley counties along with Hampshire will comprise Region 2. The two schools going to the basketball state tournaments will come from the seven schools now newly aligned.

In baseball, a proposal that has yet to be acted on by the WVSSAC would implement a new format for Regional play. The proposal calls for a best two-of-three playoff between the two new Sectional winners to decide which team goes to the state tournament. As of the 2016 playoffs, the two Sectional winners played one game with the winner reaching the state tournament in Charleston.

There are now 29 schools in all of Class AAA. Some 44 schools are lumped into the Class AA ranks and 54 smaller schools comprise the Class A ranks. Only 44 of the Class A schools sponsor football teams.
