Capital scored with long passes, long runs and an interception return as the Charleston-based Cougars defeated Jefferson, 62-18, on Saturday afternoon at damp Laidley Field in the state capital.

Capital moved into the Class AAA semifinals where it will face second-seeded Spring Valley on the road.

The other semifinal game pits top-seeded Martinsburg at home against Morgan-town.

After Jefferson, which finished with a 6-6 overall record, had taken an early, 8-7 lead following a blocked punt by Jacob Biller, Capital outscored the Shenandoah Junction Cougars, 27-2, in the remainder of the first half to establish a comfortable lead by halftime.

With Kerry Martin receiving ample protection to find his open teammates, he set a school record with 336 passing yards. Martin had four touchdown passes, all of which came from long distance.

Capital's scoring runs were all from long distance, also.

Jefferson's two touchdowns came on a Isaac Myers-to-Scooter Gaskins pass after Biller's blocked punt and Jeremy Beach's eight-yard run as the game neared its completion. Jefferson also had a safety in the first half that gave it two points.

Jefferson was outscored 28-8 in the second half.

With its 9-3 overall record, Capital travels west to Spring Valley, a team with just one loss. Spring Valley defeated Capital, 21-0, late in the regular season.
