Four unbeatens go after state football titles

December 2, 2016

They'll be celebrating more than the history of the infamous Hatfields and McCoys in Matewan if unbeaten Mingo Central can bring home the state's Class AA football championship this weekend. The Miners take a 13-0 record against Fairmont Senior after beating James Monroe, 41-21, in the semifinals. Fairmont Senior's Polar Bears eased past nemesis Bridgeport, 22-21, in two overtimes in the other Class AA semifinal game.

The Class A championship game will feature undefeated teams in top-seeded East Hardy and second-seeded St. Marys.

Both teams will carry 13-0 records to Wheeling Island Stadium for the small-school championship game.

East Hardy staggered Pendleton County, 48-20, and St. Marys had little trouble with equally unbeaten Fayetteville, winning at home, 47-0, to join the Cougars in the title game.

Once-beaten Spring Valley edged Capital, 20-14, in one of the Class AAA semifinal games while top-seeded Martinsburg drowned Morgantown, 51-0, with its defense in the other semifinal.

The Berkeley County Bulldogs are 13-0 and have posted consecutive shutout wins over Hedgesville, George Washington and Morgantown to move along to Wheeling Island Stadium and the championship game.

A relatively new school, Spring Valley has never won a state football championship. Martinsburg, on the other hand, reeled off an imposing streak of titles not that long ago.
