Myers, Gaskins are all-state, Cougars top Sherando on hardwood

Jefferson High football players Isaac Myers and Scooter Gaskins were named to the sports writers' Class AAA all-state first team.

Myers was named as a "utility" player after playing quarterback and being a defensive starter for the Cougars. Gaskins was placed on the first-team defense as a back after playing wide receiver and cornerback for Jefferson.

There were 15 players placed on the first-team offense and 15 players placed on the first-team defense.

Receiving "special honorable mention" from the panel were Jefferson's Nick Longerbeam, Jacob Biller and Jevon Long. Receiving "honorable mention" was Jeremy Beach.

Jefferson has begun the basketball season with a 4-0 record after defeating St. John the Baptist and public school Sherando in the Cougar Classic.

The seven-player St. John the Baptist team from Front Royal, Virginia couldn't keep pace with the Cougars.

Jefferson posted a 76-42 win after using its reserves extensively. The Cougars held a comfortable 23-10 lead after the first quarter.

Isaac Myers scored half his 16 points in the opening period. Mason Gray added 14 points and Alex Tennant scored 10 points.

On the second night of the tournament, Jefferson topped Sherando (Virginia), 55-45, with Tennant, Juluan Plaza and Jordan Dragon each scoring 10 points.

Jefferson held a 20-9 lead before the second half saw both teams do much more scoring.

Sherando had a 5-3 record after the loss, while the Cougars got their second win against a public school and were 4-0 with two games in the Boonsboro Tournament awaiting on Tuesday, Dec. 27, and Wednesday, Dec. 28.

Tennant was named the Cougar Classic's most valuable player and Myers was placed on the all-tournament team.
