Daycare Re-wrap helps out families

December 23, 2016

With a room-full of toys, books, gift baskets and clothes, the dedicated staff at Shepherdstown Day Care worked tirelessly to make sure their families have a nice Christmas with their annual Christmas Re-wrap program, which took place on Dec. 15.

Since about half of the families at the daycare are at or below the poverty level, families are given vouchers to shop for their kids from gently used, or even sometimes new items that have been donated. The voucher amounts are based on the family's income.

Donations are accepted from the beginning of November until a few days before the event.

Toys of all sorts were gathered and “re-wrapped” for those in need this Christmas.

Melissa Holman, director of the daycare said, "We have been really blessed to receive all the donations we get each year. Our community is great with the amount of support they give us. We don't have much space for storage, so we stuff things into every nook and cranny where we can hide something."

Staff spends hours cleaning each toy and laundering all the clothing and cloth items donated, pricing and setting up the "store."

About half of the parents who receive vouchers, come shop. Any leftover items are donated to the Women's Shelter in Martinsburg and Community Ministries.
