Janet Schroder Maddex

Janet Schroder Maddex died at the age of 102 on Jan. 10, 2017, at Winchester Medical Center. She was the widow of the late Hunter J. Maddex.

Janet was born Aug. 15, 1914, in Martinsburg, the daughter of the late Amy Glover and John L. Schroder.

She graduated from Martinsburg High School in 1931 and Shepherd College in 1935. She represented Shepherd College twice as a princess in the Apple Blossom Festival. After graduation, she taught English at Martinsburg High School.

Janet married Hunter Maddex on Aug. 19, 1936, in Martinsburg.

A long time member of Braddock Street United Methodist Church, Janet was active in the Wesley Sunday School Class for many years and later the Jubilee Fellowship Class.

For many years, she followed Handley athletics and spent time with Hunter's "boys" at the annual Handley's Hunter Maddex Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Jo LaFollette and her husband, Dick, of Chattanooga, Tennessee; two grandsons, Chip Sirbaugh and wife, Donna, of Winchester, Virginia and Craig Sirbaugh and wife, Ally, of Hagerstown, Maryland; five great-grandchildren, Noah, Rosser and Jackson Sirbaugh, of Winchester and Lacey and Braden Sirbaugh, of Hagerstown; a niece, Janet G. Stephens, who was like a second daughter, of Martinsburg; a nephew, John L. Schroder III, of Beckley; and a niece, Bobbe McClure, of Van Horn, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Frances S. Morris; and her brother, John L. Schroder Jr.

A funeral service was held 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 13, 2017, at Braddock Street United Methodist Church, Winchester, Virginia. Interment was private.
