Shepherdstown Day Care will hold its annual Wine Auction at the Bavarian Inn tomorrow, Saturday, Mar. 11, at 6 p.m. This is the tenth year for the event, and organizers say it will be the best one yet.
The evening will begin with hors d'oeuvres from local restaurants and wine and Scotch tastings. The auction will start promptly at 7 p.m., and will feature award-winning wines from France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Argentina and New Zealand, as well as American wines from California, Oregon, Washington state and Virginia. Guests will have the opportunity to bid on vacation weeks at the Simpson Bay Beach Resort in St. Maarten, or at the Islander Resort in Ocean Beach, North Carolina; an overnight stay at the Mimslyn Inn in Luray, Virginia, a gourmet dinner with wine pairings at the Bavarian Inn and a limo trip for six to area wineries, with a VIP tour and tastings at each winery.
The event will also feature a hundred-bottle "Cork Pull," which will offer auction guests chances to win bottles of wine ranging from "weeknight wines" to prized vintages. New this year is a Silent Auction, with items ranging from a 18-bottle Haier wine cooler to gift baskets featuring Virginia wines. Adding a celebratory note to this already sparkling event, a bottle of Champagne Drappier Grande Sendree 2006 will be raffled off.
"Donn Marshall, whose wit has enlivened previous auctions, will again be master of ceremonies," said SDC board vice president Dale Walter, co-chair of the event with board member Nancy Strine. "Bavarian Inn manager and sommelier David Asam, also a former board member and a SDC alumnus, has selected many of the wines to be auctioned," she added. Board members Cindy Morrow, Marianne Howard and Jan Hafer also serve on the event committee.
"This is an important fundraiser for us," said Patty Martineau, board president. "SDC is the only childcare center in the Eastern Panhandle that offers a sliding scale tuition fee based on family income. More than half of our children receive the state's tuition subsidy for low income children. Tuition payments that we receive do not fully cover operational costs, and we depend on revenue from events such as this to to help us maintain our programming."
Tickets to the Wine Auction are $50 per person in advance, or $60 per person at the door. For reservations and more information, call the center at 304-876-6923 or visit the Wine Auction website: sdcwineauction.org.
