Senior leadership leads win over Musselman

April 17, 2017
Bob Madison - Shepherdstown Chronicle , Shepherdstown Chronicle

After dropping its first game of the season on Saturday to Frankfort with a handful of younger players on stage, Jefferson improved to 7-1 on Monday with a raindrop-dodging 6-1 win over visiting Musselman with a number of seniors mostly in favor.

Senior right-hander Dylan Carroll pitched a complete game, two-hitter against the Applemen. Carroll finished strong by getting strikeouts against three of the last four batters he saw.

The Applemen managed only four baserunners against Carroll, who allowed only one walk and hit a batter.

The game was scoreless into the third inning when a light sprinkle invaded Sager Field.

In Jefferson's half of the third, senior Dalton Jamison had a lead off single and advanced on Daniel Brennan's hard ground single down the third base line. Senior utility player Austin Bulman delivered a two-run double to the fence in center field to give Carroll all the runs he would need.

Jamison plated Cory Roman, aboard via a walk, in the next inning to push the Cougar lead to 3-0.

All the time, a light but steady sprinkle steadily dampened the playing field and the huddled spectators that weren't watching from the safety of their vehicles.

Musselman scratched out its only run in the fifth when Carroll's only walk, Chris Fox's single, a successful sacrifice bunt and an infield groundout brought Jefferson's edge back to 3-1.

Seniors Dalton Dodson, Jamison and Bulman had safeties in a put-the-game-away sixth inning. Brennan also contributed his third hit of the night as the Cougars scored three times to distance themselves from the Applemen.

Bulman, who has at least one hit in all eight games, was 2-for-4 after going 6-for-6 in the doubleheader split with Frankfort on Saturday.

Jamison landed three hits as the designated hitter and Dalton Dodson had two hits.

The Cougars and their list of seniors travel to play Sectional rival Washington on Tuesday, April 11, at 4:30 p.m. and see Musselman again on Thursday, April 13, at 7 p.m. in Inwood.

It wasn't "Senior Night" in the five-run victory over Musselman . . . but it felt like it . . . if you could keep from getting wet in the light rain.
