David Hellyer

May 12, 2017
Shepherdstown Chronicle

Shepherdstown is known for many things, especially people who would not fit in anywhere else. Many have gravitated to The Folly, where creativity and chaos go hand in hand. One of the most unique and creative was David Hellyer, who departed this plane of existence at 9 p.m. on Sunday, April 30. He is survived by his beloved wife of forty years, Suzanne; his sons, Miles and Dion; and five grandchildren - Tatum, Zoey, Nate, Silas and Margeaux.

David Hellyer was born on July 16, 1946 in Gosport, United Kingdom. His extensive travels eventually landed him in Shepherdstown, where he became known and loved for his music, his quick wit, mad skills and enduring love for Zan and their sons.

An intelligent, extraordinarily talented and exceptionally complex man, Dave was a brilliant blues harpist who could play with musicians from any and all eras. Anyone who had the good fortune to hear Dave play knows he was a true master of his instrument. Dave was also an amazing craftsman and artisan, who could create anything you dreamed up from any medium. He also possessed a keen wit and great sense of humor.

Our community has lost a true original, the very model of a devastated hero. A celebration of Dave's life will be held at The Folly on May 20, 2017.
