Cross, Pine, Delawder land on all-state team

June 16, 2017
Bob Madison - For the Chronicle , Shepherdstown Chronicle

Jefferson pitcher/infielder Austin Cross, Washington catcher Cameron Pine and Washington outfielder Spencer Delawder have been selected to the West Virginia Class AAA first-team All-State baseball team. The team was chosen by the state Sports Writers Association.

Cross had a 7-2 record this season as the Cougars recorded a 26-7 overall record. He also had a .333 batting average, playing first base when not pitching. The senior left-hander will be going to Radford (Virginia) University in the fall.

Pine, a junior, batted over .400 and drew attention as the Patriots began winning games through the season. When Washington reached the four-team state tournament, Pine could be seen by many more writers.

Delawder, another junior, was recognized as one of Washington's best players and, like Pine, drew considerable attention when the Patriots defeated Hampshire, Jefferson and Hedgesville to win their way to the state tournament in Charleston. Delawder batted .375 and was considered one of the state's premier defensive center fielders.

Washington's Jack Dubyak, a senior, was a second-team selection after winning eight games as a pitcher.

Receiving Special Honorable Mention notice were Jefferson designated hitter/outfielder Dalton Jamison, Jefferson pitcher Dylan Carroll and Washington outfielder Dalton Jackson. Jamison was Jefferson's leading hitter, Carroll won six games and Jackson batted lead-off for the Patriots, who completed a 24-7 season with a loss in the opening round at the state tournament.

Placed on a list of Honorable Mention players were Jefferson second baseman Alex Tennant, Jefferson utility player Austin Bulman and Washington pitcher/infielder Nathan Kerr.
