September 15, 2017

More than a dozen members of the Shepherdstown Rotary Club spent their Tuesday morning pulling weeds, sweeping and trimming brush along the Rumsey Bridge, and down into the the tow path entrance as part of their contribution to the annual United Way Day of Caring.

The Rumsey Bridge clean up was organized by Steve Campbell of the Shepherdstown Rotary Club.

"This is good timing with the Freedom's Run," Campbell said. "We're trying to make the appearance of coming into Shepherdstown a little bit nicer. It's also good because Octoberfest at the Bavarian is coming up soon."

Volunteers from Shepherdstown Rotary Club clean up along the Rumsey Bridge on Tuesday during the 23rd annual United Way Day of Caring.

Campbell said his group usually cleans up along W.Va. 230, from Hoxton Insurance all the way to the split near Trough Road, but decided to take on this stretch of road since they meet at the Bavarian.

For 23 years, the United Way of the Eastern Panhandle's Day of Caring has offered businesses, individuals, organizations and civic clubs the opportunity to help local nonprofit agencies accomplish much-needed projects during one day of organized volunteerism. Hundreds of volunteers came together on Tuesday and volunteered their time at service projects throughout Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan counties.
