Although Jefferson County's Relay for Life isn't until June, organizers and teams are preparing now for the annual fundraiser for cancer research.

The kickoff takes place on Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. in Charles Town Baptist Church's social hall.

Those wishing to enter chili into the contest may choose from three categories: traditional, spicy or unique. There's no entry fee to participate. Tastings will go from 2:30 to 4 p.m. with a winner announced at 4:30 p.m.

Cancer survivors walk the “survivor’s lap” at the 2017?Jefferson County Relay for Life. More than 45 teams were a part of last year’s event. This year’s Relay kicks off with a chili cookoff on Jan. 20 in Charles Town Baptist Church.

In addition to the chili cookoff, there will be games, information booths and fundraisers of various types presented by teams who will take part in the Relay in June.

"We hope to have at least 15 chili entries," said Heather Fauble, one of the organizers of the Relay. "There will be additional food for sale as well."

The annual Jefferson County Relay for Life hosted more than 45 teams in 2017, all of whom worked to raise funds to help find a cure for cancer. The teams work to raise funds throughout the year by doing raffles, sales and other events as well as gathering donations.

The top fundraising team last year was the Hearts of Hope, who raised more than $16,000. Team co-captain Kathy Moler said the team, made up of at least 20 people, has raised between $10,000 and $15,000 each year since they began relaying.

Fauble, a member of the Hearts of Hope team, said that in addition to information about Relay itself, attendees will be able to learn about the American Cancer Society.

Also on tap for the kickoff event this year is a luminaria ceremony, which will begin at 4 p.m.

In addition, this year's Honorary Chair, Michelle Hart, will be on hand to share her journey as a cancer survivor.

For more information on signing up to enter the chili cookoff, or to find out how to support an existing team or join Relay with a new team, contact Heather at relayforLife@aol.com or call 304-283-3305.
