‘Fat Tuesday’ is the day for pancakes

February 16, 2018

Citizen's Fire Company in Charles Town kept with tradition on Shrove Tuesday, holding its annual Pancake Day fundraising event. The fire and rescue volunteers served pancakes, sausage, gravy and eggs - at least to the morning attendees - from 6 to 7 p.m. They were joined by volunteers from within the community who helped flip some pancakes, clear tables and empty trash.

The event, anticipated by many each year, brings together those who love pancakes, love to sit and talk, and who are preparing for the Lenten season by enjoying the day's fare. It's held each year on Shrove Tuesday.

"Every year during Pancake Day I'm blown away at the way our community comes together," said Christopher Cross, department member. "People from all socioeconomic backgrounds, of different races and nationalities, political beliefs and religious preference all coexist for one common event."

Glen Ramsberg, left, has participated in every Pancake Day event at Citizens Fire Company. He’s joined by President Ron Fletcher on Tuesday.

Company President Ron Fletcher reported late Tuesday evening that the company served 1,967 attendees, not including children who ate at no cost. Fletcher estimated approximately 400 kids attended.

Those numbers indicate a preliminary intake of over $15,000, so the department will see a profit of over $10,000 after expenses. This is the largest fundraising event Citizens Fire Company holds to raise dollars for its volunteer department.

But to company members and the community, the event is more than just a fundraiser.

The truth in Cross's words could be seen as the line for pancakes often stretched around the equipment bay that was filled with tables to gather.

"I'm proud of our small community and all of its residents," Cross said. "I'm more proud of Citizens Fire Company being the catalyst to bring everyone together."
