Shepherd baseball sweeps conference twinbill at Glenville

After splitting a conference doubleheader with homestanding West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday, Shepherd stayed on the road and swept a conference twinbill at Glenville on Monday.

The four games were the first league games for the Rams and left them with a 3-1 Mountain East Conference record and evened their overall mark at 8-8. West Virginia Wesleyan was left with a 2-12 record and Glenville had a 4-14 record when finished with Shepherd.

Ryan Potts improved his record to 4-1 with a complete-game two-hitter in Shepherd's 8-0 win over the Bobcats in Sunday's first game. Potts fanned seven and didn't walk any.

Shepherd held only a 2-0 lead before erupting for six runs in the sixth inning.

Dalton Haymaker went 2-for-3 with a home run and double while driving in three runs. Christian Hamel was 3-for-4 and had two RBIs. Reid Entsminger went 4-for-4 as Shepherd hammered out 16 hits. Both Brenton Doyle and Nick Atkinson had two hits.

The Bobcats posted a 5-0 win in the nightcap. Shepherd had only three hits, with Justin Smith going 2-for-3. Colin Benner was the loser, going five innings and allowing all five runs, four of which were earned.

The next day, Shepherd posted a 10-2 first-game win over Glenville with left-hander Justin Smith getting the pitching win with five innings of work. He allowed five hits, didn't walk anybody and fanned three. Smith is now 2-1.

The Rams had a seven-run, fifth inning rally. Trenton Burgreen homered and had four RBIs. Doyle was 3-for-5 and Daniel Heleine was 2-for-4. Eric Sloper went 2-for-3.

In the nightcap at Glenville, the Rams pounded out 18 hits and scored 11 runs in the second inning, and completed their scoring with a five-run seventh inning. In winning 20-3, the Rams had Atkinson hit for the cycle (single, double, triple and home run) with his four hits that drove in four runs. He also scored four runs.

Heleine clubbed two homers, while Doyle and Hamel both contributed two hits. Wes Martin was the winning pitcher, improving his record to 2-1 with five innings of work.

Shepherd will be at home Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Charleston. On Sunday, the Rams have another conference doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m. against West Virginia State.
