Hedgesville strikes late to beat quiet Jefferson

March 30, 2018
Bob Madison - For the Chronicle , Shepherdstown Chronicle

Jefferson was able to nurse a two-run lead until the top of the seventh, when Hedgesville used Hunter Coe's two-run single to send the game into extra innings. The Cougars, who had scored their only runs in the second, couldn't score in the bottom of the seventh or eighth and lost 3-2 when Brady Weaver plated the game-winning run in the top of the ninth - and again, the Cougars couldn't score in the bottom of the inning.

Hunter Stang had Jefferson's only two hits in its nine turns. Jefferson pitcher Jordan Trunnell lasted two innings, but his four walks were partial reason for replacing him with James Walsh. Walsh worked five innings, allowing four hits and two walks while blanking the Eagles until the seventh when an error kept the Hedgesville inning alive. Both runs scored in the Eagles' seventh were unearned.

Cullen Horowicz replaced Walsh in the eighth and he suffered the loss, allowing three hits in his two innings and an earned run.

Hedgesville had eight hits off the combined efforts of the three Jefferson pitchers. Jefferson batters struck out nine times. Hedgesville committed four errors.

The Cougars are scheduled to play county rival Washington tonight at 6 p.m. at Sager Field and return tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. to face Keyser in the same location. It's off to Myrtle Beach next week for at least four games, with the first one scheduled for Tuesday against Socastee (South Carolina).
