Phyllis K. Kogelschatz

Phyllis Kidwell Kogelschatz, of Martinsburg, died on May 5, 2018, at Hospice of the Panhandle. She was 100 years old.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis W. Kogelschatz; son, William "Bill" Kogelschatz; and sister, Winifred Hammond.

Born November 29, 1917, in Charleston, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Russell Guy Kidwell and Jane Winifred Friskey Kidwell.

She graduated from Syracuse University with a B.S. in business in 1939, was a member and president of Pi Beta Phi and member of Eta Pi Upsilon societies.

She married Louis W. Kogelschatz, of Martinsburg, in 1941.

A beloved teacher, Phyllis taught at Martinsburg High School from 1939 to 1941 and from 1968 to 1978, and Hedgesville High School from 1959 to 1968 and as a substitute teacher from 1978 to 1986. She also taught several typing courses and computer keyboarding for Berkeley County Adult Education.

Phyllis served her community as a 4-H Leader, and enjoyed traveling, reading and knitting. She was a member of the Blue Ridge knitting group. A founding member of the Gateway Garden Club, she always enjoyed working in her garden.

When they were children, Phyllis and her sister, Winifred Hammond, were the first delivery girls for Superior Dairy, when milk was delivered to homes in glass bottles.

She is survived by her daughters, Linda Wanger and husband H. Alexander Wanger and Jane Kogelschatz and son Adolph "Ad" Kogelschatz; four grandchildren, Emily Wanger Romine and husband Brian Romine, David Wanger and wife Diane Truong Wanger, Skylar Kogelschatz and Danika Kogelschatz Lippert and husband Cameron Lippert; and four great-grandchildren, Alex and Max Romine and Covey and Kella Lippert.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on May 24 at the Christ Reformed United Church of Christ at 117 E. Burke St. in Martinsburg.
