SHEPHERDSTOWN - Five multi-sport athletes were recently inducted into the Shepherdstown High School Athletic Hall of Fame. The 2018 class was only the second one that has had only athletes. In 2016, the first group of Hall of Fame selections was only composed of coaches.

This year's class had Anthony Roman (basketball and track and field), Jerry Derr (basketball, baseball and football), Charles Winfrey (football, basketball and track and field), Laign Banks (football, basketball and baseball) and Jerry Mahoney (baseball, basketball and football).

Mahoney was only a junior in 1972, when the high school closed its doors. He went to the newly consolidated Jefferson High School when it opened in the fall of 1972 for his senior year.

The second Hall of Fame class, selected last year, also had five members.

Coach Harry Lothes was at Shepherdstown High for three years after a three-year career as a basketball player at WVU. He was selected as the Mountaineers basketball coach for one season, achieving an 8-11 overall record with a team that did not have any players from the previous team. While at SHS, he coached every sport that was offered.

Steve Holmes participated in three sports at SHS before later playing football at Shepherd.

Allen Mahoney played both baseball and basketball for the Cardinals.

A four-sport standout was Charles Hunter, who won All-Sectional area honors during his high school career.

Another four-sport athlete was John Shackelford, who even started for the basketball team as a freshman.
