Cubs use shutout pitching, late-game rallies

SHEPHERDSTOWN -- Playing its fifth game in two days, the Jefferson Cubs 16U travel team used the complete game, two-hit pitching of Hayden Stang to win the lengthy tournament in and around Baltimore and College Park, Maryland.

The Cubs had been stymied in their first game on Saturday, in dropping a 3-0 verdict to Canes North 2020. Jefferson was no-hit in the game, limited to just 4.5 innings by the tournament's time-limit rule.

In an afternoon game against the Eldridge Hurricanes, the Cubs blanked their opposition 13-0, behind the low-hit pitching of James Walsh. Walsh allowed only two hits to the Hurricanes, while fanning four in his four innings of work.

Jefferson had 11 hits in the four-inning game, with Chase Anderson and Malaki Meadows each getting two hits. Zach Stoner, Dylan McCartney and Kamien Gonzalez all had two RBIs.

By beating the Hurricanes, the Cubs moved along to the next morning's game against the East Coast Royals.

Trailing 2-0 after five innings, the Cubs rallied for five runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh, to post a come-from-behind, 9-4, win.

Stoner and Stang both had two hits, with Mason LaFollette driving in two runs. Will Ricketts pitched 3.2 innings with Walsh coming in for 1.2 innings. The Cubs played errorless baseball with the Royals committing six errors.

In an early afternoon game on the same day, the Cubs used another late-inning rally to eliminate Baseball Warehouse 2020, 8-5.

Trailing 4-3, the Cubs posted a four-run sixth inning to stay alive in the tournament.

Jefferson landed 11 hits off Baseball Warehouse 2020 pitching.

Stevie Lee and Zac Rose each contributed three hits to the Cubs offense. Lee drove in a pair of runs.

Stoner pitched 5.1 innings for the win.

Then came the Cubs' third game that day, a game where they met the same Canes North 2020 team that had blanked them the prior morning.

The game was scoreless after six innings, as the Cubs had gone 11 consecutive innings without scoring against Canes North.

Stang's shutout pitching had kept the Cubs even on the scoreboard.

Jefferson pushed across two runs in the top of the seventh . . . and Stang made the small lead hold up, by blanking Canes North in the bottom of the seventh. Stang's complete-game effort saw him allow only two hits and strike out five.

Lee, Stang and Gonzalez each had two hits for the Cubs, who were limited to those six hits.

The Cubs had won their last four games, to become the tournament champions. Connor LaBombard was also a member of the team.
