SHEPHERDSTOWN -- Santa has been making a habit of enjoying breakfast with children this season, and as such, made his way to the Blue Moon Caf Saturday to enjoy meeting all of his young friends.

Joined by Mrs. Claus, Santa was welcomed by the Lions Club of Shepherdstown to meet and greet, and listen to wish lists of all the children who joined in the breakfast event.

According to Marianne Davis, vice president of the Lions Club in Shepherdstown, this was the second year Santa had made his way from the North Pole to have a breakfast event at the Blue Moon.

Families filled the restaurant to enjoy a delicious feast of biscuits, gravy, pancakes, bacon and eggs as they waited their turn to chat with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

"We had a little more than 100 before 9 a.m.," Davis said.

The holiday event raises funds for the club to use in service projects. Among the ongoing projects is the provision of eyeglasses to those who cannot afford them.

"We also assist Jefferson County Community Ministries in providing shelter for the homeless in our community during the winter months," Davis said.

In addition to these projects, the Shepherdstown club has assisted the Berkeley Springs Lions Club with the purchase of a diabetes alert dog for a member of their community and the club donated an outdoor fountain, in the shape of a lion, to Shepherdstown Elementary School.

These activities embody the mission of the Lions Club International which is "to empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding through Lions clubs."

Lions Clubs around the world number more than 47,000 in over 200 countries. Membership in those clubs tops 1.7 million.

The Shepherdstown Club meets once per month at various restaurants in town.

"Dues are $67 per year," Davis said. "And everyone is welcome."
