SPRING MILLS -- Hosting the Class AAA, Region 2 track and field meet made it easier to arrange a proper celebration for Spring Mills, once it officially edged Hedgesville, 132-117 in the scoring on the boy's side.

The seven-school event was held under a thick cover of gray clouds, with the temperature hovering around 60 with a light, swirling wind to add to the chill.

The Cardinals and Eagles waged an impressive skirmish ahead of the Region's other five schools, with Musselman notching 78 points, Martinsburg 73, Hampshire 53, Jefferson 50 and Washington, trailing in last place with 47 points.

Spring Mills ran up its point total with success in the shortest sprints, through middle distance races, the weights, relays and even the longest races.

Hedgesville could get points from three athletes in one individual event and two runners in other races.

The other five teams tried to dodge the wake caused by the top two schools, but didn't make enough impact to bother either.

Jefferson had Kyle de Nobel win the 1600 run in 4:45.61. But Nobel was Jefferson's only first-place finisher in the meet. Paul Breeden was second in the 300 hurdles.

The Jefferson girls placed fifth as a team, as Martinsburg (a winning 106 points) and host Spring Mills (102 points) waged a scoring duel through the early afternoon hours.

Hedgesville finished third with 88.5 points, Hampshire fourth with 85, Jefferson was next with 79, with Musselman (67) and Washington (24.5) in sixth and seventh place.

Jefferson's Jillian Andrews won the long jump and Trinity Blue was second in the 200 meters in individual events.

The Cougars won a pair of relays.

Andrews, Blue, Jordan Carr and Hailey Dillow teamed up, to win the 4x100 relay for 10 points and then Carr, Blue, Dillow and Clara Bennette were the foursome placing first in the 4x200 relay, for another 10 team points.
