Unique summer camp to be held at Kearneysville church

June 7, 2019
Toni Milbourne - For the Chronicle , Shepherdstown Chronicle

KEARNEYSVILLE -- The Church of the Ascension, located at 73 Edmund Road, Suite 2 in Kearneysville, will offer a Super Hero Training Camp from June 19-23, with evening hours Wednesday through Thursday from 5:30 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The camp, according to one of its organizers, Laura Harper, will provide a Christian-based full creative arts camp for children, ranging from kindergarten and up.

Attendees will "learn to be a superhero for Jesus with these powers: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control," according to the event Facebook page.

"There will be a variety of activities taught by great teachers," Harper said, mentioning the activities will include acrylic painting, woodworking and food creation.

Food will also be provided, during the evening events.

"Wednesday through Friday nights there will be a light supper provided," Harper said. "Campers will be creating snacks with an artistic flair."

Erik Reyes, a competitive soccer player, will join the campers Wednesday and Friday evenings to offer some skills training in competitive sports.

Along with sports and art, music will also play a key role in the camp, as a member of the worship team at the church will teach children about music, as he shares his love for the guitar.

The camp will also feature a worship and dance program, where campers will learn dance moves and choreograph their own dance, which will then be performed for parents on the last day of the camp. Another instructor will lead the campers in learning dramatic skills and lead them in performing a short play, "The Toy Maker" at the end of camp. The last of camp will also feature an ice cream social, water balloon toss and an art gallery of camper projects, according to Harper.

Parents may register children online at the event's Facebook page, Creative Arts Superhero Camp. Scholarships and multi-family member discounts are available. For additional information on camp costs, email kidz@ascensionwv.org.
