SHENANDOAH JUNCTION -- Coming off last week's 64-14 victory over winless Hedgesville, Jefferson will close out its 2019 football season at Washington tonight.

The Cougars improved to 2-7 overall, and will finish against county rival Washington, now 3-6 overall after trouncing winless Hampshire last week.

Having little or no problems with Hedgesville's three-man defensive front, the Cougars had Francis Diaz, Nathan Muhle and Corbin Pierson do much of the work on the ground.

Given the luxury of time to find his passing targets, Pierson often used Antoine Lewis and Jon Gidney to move the football against the Eagles.

The Jefferson defense limited the Eagles to just 194 yards of total offense. Hedgesville will complete its season tonight against county rival Spring Mills. Hedgesville will take its 0-9 record against the Cardinals, who are 5-4 and in prime contention for one of the 16 playoff berths available in Class AAA.

Gidney has a pass interception to his credit in the team's second win of the season.

The Eagles got touchdowns from Gerald Jones and Devin Heath.

Washington has wins over Hedgesville, Park View (Va.) and Hampshire this season, while the Cougars have defeated Heritage (Va.) and Hedgesville.

The West Virginia playoffs will begin on Nov. 15-16, with all three classifications taking 16 teams to the postseason. The three state championship games are played at Wheeling Island Stadium on the first weekend in December.
