Turner gets gold, Jefferson teams sixth and ninth

MORGANTOWN -- From a individual standpoint, Jefferson swimmer Chris Turner had the most distinguished state meet of any Eastern Panhandle athlete when he won the 100 freestyle and placed second in the 50 freestyle last week in Morgantown.

Turner's point total helped the Cougars to finish sixth in the boy's team standings.

The Jefferson 200 freestyle relay placed fourth and Zack Bishop finished fifth in the 100 backstroke.

George Washington from Kanawha County held off Bridgeport for the team championship.

The Patriots amassed 180 points to edge the Indians. Bridgeport faced an uphill battle going into the meet's final event and couldn't overcome the George Washington lead -- finishing second in the team standings with 172 points.

Hurricane placed third with 120 points with Wheeling Park getting fourth place with its 107 points.

Huntington notched 100 points for fifth place, one spot ahead of Jefferson and its 74 team points.

The youthful George Washington girls team also captured the state championship.

The Patriots had seven freshmen qualify for the state meet. George Washington ran up a strong 206 points to keep Parkersburg (166 points) at arm's length.

Wheeling Park was third in the girl's division with 134 points, just in front of Buckhannon's 127 points.

Finishing fifth in the girl's bracket was Morgantown with 113 points. Bridgeport was sixth with 104 points, and Fairmont Senior from Region II was seventh in the team standings with 76 points.

Hurricane totaled 73 points for eighth place and Jefferson was ninth with 48 points.

Jefferson's Sierra Knott gave the Cougars their best individual finish when she was fourth in 50 freestyle.
