CHARLES TOWN -- The Jefferson Arts Council is sponsoring an exhibit highlighting the work of students within the Jefferson County school system. Art educators from various schools selected student artwork to be displayed as part of the exhibit at the Washington Street Gallery, 108 North George Street in Charles Town.

The exhibit will be open to the public through March 28.

The school's educators chose artwork to represent a variety of creative ideas, styles and techniques that the students have learned in their art classes.

The Jefferson Arts Council has a mission of bringing art to everyone. Through this mission, the organization works to maximize the impact of the arts in the community, create arts-based cultural alliances and provide direct grants to promote arts education and projects.

The art showing highlighting students' abilities shows the impact that various grants made to public educators has made within the school walls. The Jefferson Arts Council provides such grants each year.

The council is also designed to assist qualified arts programs to deliver quality arts programming, another aspect of their influence that is evident in the creativity of the young artists within the Jefferson County school system.

Through their Teaching Arts Creatively program, the Jefferson Arts Council helps to assist the teaching of the arts at any level in any content area. For example, a math instructor may bring into the classroom a sculptor or furniture maker to help illustrate academic content. This allows students to connect with what they are learning inside the classroom in relation to what they observe outside the classroom.

Teaching Arts Creatively promotes the ability for teacher to present concepts in new and exciting ways in an experiential learning environment.

The next grant cycle has applications being accepted in September 2020. There will be grant workshops prior to that time to help explain the application process. Interested parties should regularly check the Arts Council website for dates and details at www.jeffersonartscouncil.org.
